There are no barriers to entry for web developers - anyone can put up a website and get business. When hiring a web developer, you get what you pay for. Besides, unless you instruct otherwise, chances are your developer will use a template - something you can do and save the hundreds or thousands of dollars you pay simply for a template set up by a website developer.
Businesses need to have professionally designed invoice for creating the best impression on their clients. The invoice is the last component of your sales deal that should get registered in the mind of the customer. Isn't it nice to close the deals using an impressive, proficiently-designed invoice?
Templates are easy to use. You can find paid and free templates that let you customize the design without knowing a single line of code. Note that not all templates offer this. If you want easy customization, be sure that your intended template purchase has this feature.
All of this is but only the tip of the iceberg. The real value lies in more complex usage, like customer relations, sales & marketing, HR management and performance analysis. Some of these are freely available, like a tool which helps poll customers and tabulate the survey data into charts and reports.
Assuming that you are reasonably proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, you may create your own invoice template; but why go to all the trouble of reinventing the wheel? Most build-it-yourself templates require updating and adjusting for each new invoice, and they often do not calculate running totals or sum-up the bottom lines the way you wish. Moreover, if you send your invoices via electronic mail, you must complete the process of mail-merging to make them go out automatically. When you download templates, you can set the parameters so that the software does all the calculations as soon as you enter the customer's name and the numbers.
You can go about it one of two ways. Find a template platform you like (i.e. for WordPress: Genesis, Builder, Thesis, etc. or HTML templates and know you'll be revising the design a fair amount). Or, look for a website template that is as close to what you're looking for as possible to minimize the amount of customization work. Moreover, if you decide to install and set up the template yourself, you can be your own webmaster. That's what I do for my small business. I have a huge advantage because I can make changes and add content any time I like. I don't have to send instructions to and then review the work of a webmaster.
